HVAC Tips, Water Softener

How can you determine if a water softener is necessary for your home?

March 31, 2026

Calgary is known for its hard water. High mineral content — primarily calcium and magnesium — can take a silent toll on your home's plumbing, appliances, and even your skin. So how do you know if a water softener is right for your home?

What Is Hard Water?

Hard water contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals. Calgary's municipal water is moderately hard to very hard depending on the season, typically ranging between 160–200 mg/L of calcium carbonate.

Signs You May Need a Water Softener

1. White Scale Buildup on Fixtures

Notice chalky white or yellowish deposits on your faucets, showerheads, and inside your kettle? That's limescale — a direct sign of hard water. Left untreated, it accumulates inside pipes and around heating elements, reducing efficiency and shortening appliance life.

2. Soap Doesn't Lather Well

Hard water minerals react with soap to form a curd rather than a lather. If you need twice the amount of shampoo or dish soap to get results, hard water is likely the culprit.

3. Dry Skin and Hair

The same minerals that prevent soap from lathering also stay on your skin and hair after rinsing, leaving them feeling dry, itchy, or dull. Many families in Calgary report significant improvement in skin and hair health after installing a softener.

4. Stiff, Rough Laundry

Hard water deposits settle into fabric fibres during washing, making clothes feel stiff and rough even after drying. Whites may appear grey or dingy over time.

5. Shorter Appliance Lifespan

Water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines that run on hard water accumulate scale on internal heating elements. This dramatically reduces efficiency and lifespan — sometimes cutting appliance life in half.

6. Higher Energy Bills

Limescale on your water heater's heating element acts as an insulator, forcing the unit to use more energy to heat the same amount of water. A softener can reduce water heating costs by up to 30%.

How to Test Your Water Hardness

You can purchase inexpensive water hardness test strips at most hardware stores or request a free water test from Proton HVAC. Results above 120 mg/L generally warrant a softener for a healthy-sized household.
