Tips to Get Your Furnace Winter-Ready

April 14, 2026

As Calgary winters set in, your furnace becomes the most important appliance in your home. A little preparation before the cold hits can prevent breakdowns, improve efficiency, and keep your family warm all season long.

1. Replace or Clean Your Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow and makes your furnace work harder. Replace it every 1–3 months during heating season. A clean filter also improves indoor air quality significantly.

2. Schedule a Professional Furnace Tune-Up

An annual inspection by a certified HVAC technician catches small problems before they become costly repairs. Our technicians check ignition components, heat exchangers, burners, and safety controls.

3. Test Your Thermostat Early

Switch your thermostat to heat mode before the first cold snap. If the furnace doesn’t respond, check your batteries and circuit breaker first, then call us if the issue persists.

4. Clear Vents and Registers

Walk through each room and make sure all supply and return air vents are open and unobstructed by furniture, rugs, or drapes. Blocked vents force your furnace to work overtime.

5. Inspect the Flue Pipe

Check the exhaust flue for signs of rust, gaps, or blockages. Birds and small animals sometimes nest in flue pipes during summer. A blocked flue can cause dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.

6. Test Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Every furnace produces carbon monoxide as a byproduct of combustion. Ensure all CO detectors are working and replace batteries annually.

7. Consider a Furnace Tune-Up Special
